TANDOOR INDIAN RESTAURANT

This is by far my favorite Indian food restaurant!

From the beginning, I was never all that into Indian food, to be more honest, I was kind of scared, mainly because I didnt know how to order. I first tried Indian food outside of Chicago with a friend who lived near an Indian restaurant. Neither of us really knew what we were doing, so we just ordered what sounded good. I ended up deciding on the Chicken Masala which I stupidly read as "chicken marsala". Expecting chicken with mushrooms and a dark marsala wine sauce, I was shocked when they placed a cream-based, red curry in front of me instead! The sauce ended up being way too thick and heavy, the chicken pieces more like dog food and the whole meal not exactly agreeing with my "stomach", if you know what I mean...

I did go on to try a couple of other Indian restaurants since then, but all with bad results, so when my boyfriend told me he wanted to take me to his favorite place in Sarasota, I was a little skeptical. But I figured it would be nice to have some guidence with the menu and relunctantly agreed to try it out. The restaurant he took me to was Tandoor Fine Indian Cuisine off Beneva and Clark Rd. I was hooked! The food was excellent and the owners (who are there every day) are super nice and helpful.

We make a regular visit here now at least once a week. Sometimes I find myself craving it even more often, We always start with an order of Papdom (crisp pepper cracker from India) which comes with sweet onion chutney. Then we share an order of onion bhajji's - fried onion in a chickpea batter which I like to eat with the green sauce (mint and cilantro sauce). I tend to either get the chicken or lamb curry and a side of dal mahkni (black lentils in a ginger cream sauce) with a side of the garlic naan. Each entree comes with complimentary, perfectly cooked and seasoned basmati rice. Ask for the trio of sauces - they're all delicious. My boyfriend tends to always get a Taj (Indian beer) and I usually have a glass of Malbec wine.

Tandoor also features an all-u-can-eat buffet / tasting on certain Sunday's from 5-10 pm (check their website) - this is a great opportunity to try a taste of all different types of Indian dishes, for those that either love it or are unsure about it.  Try them out - it's the best Indian food I've ever eaten and the best in Sarasota by far!

My Favorites: Chicken Curry, Lamb Curry, Chicken Do Pyaza, Dal Tadka, Dal Makhni, Garlic Naan, Onion Bhajji, Seekh Kebab, Poori puffed bread
Atmosphere: Dark, romantic dining room, windows at one end
Cost: Appetizers start around $4.50 and Entrees range from $10.95 for vegetarian options to $17.95 for seafood options but can easily feed 2 people.
